New AQA Course - P1a Module Revision

Energy and Electricity

There are three parts to this unit:- energy transfers, electrical energy and energy resources.

Energy Transfers

You should revise your Year 9 work on forms of energy, and how to interpret Sankey Diagrams.  A most important area is heat energy transfer: conduction, convection and radiation. Make sure you can explain how each works and how to reduce them.

Try this matching exercise or this gap-fill.  Go back to the study page and check you can complete the Sankey Diagram worksheets as well as the sheet on home insulation. Try this quiz on heat transfer.

Electrical Energy

Devices that transfer electrical energy have a power rating - how quickly they 'use electricity'. The energy they transfer depends on the power and how long they are turned on for. Multiply kW by hrs to get kWh. The trick is to make sure you convert W to kW and time to hrs.

If you can follow this, you are fine:- 1400W used for 90 minutes is really 1.4kW for 1.5 hours (1.4 x 1.5 = 2.1 kWh)

How much of this energy is transferred usefully is the efficiency - it's always less than the amount of energy put in, so efficiency is always a decimal - 0.something.

Quizzes on this topic - efficiency, electricity.

Energy Resources

These are ways of generating electricity. The best site to revise this is Andy Darvill's. Try a quiz on energy resources.
